Dyslexia: Visually Deaf? Auditory Blind? (Paperback) This book is AMAZING. I am 34 years old and dyslexic and have read numerous books by people claiming to know what dyslexia is and how it affects people. But this book is written by someone with dyslexia so they write in away that dyslexics can relate to, and touch upon subjects even the most knowledgable non-dyslexic cannot possible know.

This review is from: Dyslexia: Visually Deaf? Auditory Blind? (Paperback)
My son 35 yrs old and dyslexic, bullied at school by pupil and teachers alike for being different. It was struggle in so many ways for my son, myself and family. Trying to get an education whilst keeping him on the straight and narrow at times proved difficult. The world around reacted towards him with a constant misunderstanding, this caused mental distress and confusion for us both. THIS BOOK IS BRILLIANT for the first time I can understand how his brain works and he laughed and said 'that's how I've always been, I thought it was the same for everyone else'. This book, it's a must for any family who's experiencing dyslexia and it's associated problems, it makes understanding the problem so easy. I've purchased three of these books in total and am passing them around to anyone interested

Dear Gary

I am a teacher of 30 years working with children with learning disabilities . A friend of mine told
me about your story . I thought, here we go again , another cure . I've visited your website and was
shocked . The people you work with the things you have done I had never heard of a lack of internal speech .
This shocked me . I did not come to buy a book , but I am so glad I did , what a revelation .
The first time , I truly understand the condition dyslexia  I recommend anybody teaches parents
or the general public to read this book . It was excellent

Dear Gary
I do not know anybody who has dyslexia but for many years I was very curious . I had heard about people who had this condition , but did not know what it was . I ordered your book, and now I truly understand I have never read a book with so much emotion and passion and understanding your book explained . The condition also explains in a very easy way to understand to a person who has no knowledge on the subject . I know understand why children suffer at school and adults in the workplace. You must be commended for producing such a book . I will recommend your book to all my friends and colleagues .
Many thanks
Dear Gary,

. I am a Deputy Headteacher in a school in Essex that consists of approx 200 children. I am writing to you in reference to your fascinating slot on Jeremy Vine's Radio 2 show.

As a teacher I was in school on Monday when you were on, but my husband told me about it over dinner that evening. He had heard the show and knew instantly that it would be of interest to me. I teach a class of 31 Year 3&4 pupils aged 7-9, with a high proportion of children with special educational needs, (SEN). Over 1/3 of these children are statemented for their SEN and many others have other grades of SEN. A lot of these pupil's academic progress is limited despite many interventions and fantastic support. I went into school today (23/2) and spoke to our staff about what my husband had heard. This led to a lengthy, fascinating discussion at school in the staff room and then continued!!

After lunch my class normally partake in reading, usually silent whilst I take the register. Today I asked my class, as normal, to read but this time myself and my TA's simply observed. I was amazed. So many of my children (mostly SEN) move their lips whilst reading, it then makes me question their development in terms of their inner speech/voice and whether they have one. Is this a matter of brain development? Maturation? Can it be developed? Taught? So many questions!!!

I really think there's something in this and am very keen to look further into it. This really could be the key to aiding their development and understanding how best to support these children. I'd love to hear any advice you can offer me and any investigations that I could pursue with these children. If I can identify that this is indeed a major issue in terms of their development and learning journey then what can I do? What would you suggest? What helped you?

I am sure that you are extremely busy but I would really appreciate any help and advice you could offer, as I said- I'm fascinated and sure that this really is the key to helping these kids!
Regards

Hello Gary

Please can you tell me if there is an audio version of this book? I am a nurse working within

psychiatric services with a young male adult with severe dyslexia. I have just read Gary’s book and would love this man to be able to read it as well. I think he would benefit greatly from hearing Gary’s story and it would be too much pressure for him to have me read it to him. From my own perspective, the book has opened up a whole new understanding of dyslexia that I was struggling to comprehend. It makes such perfect sense.

Many thanks

Dear Gary

Thanks for replying to my e-mail. I have since read your book and it is about the only theory that has rang a bell with me. I agree with you that we talk in pictures as i never really realised this untill i read your book. My head is a constant jumble " mess" of stuff and it is at a fanominal speed. So much so i can't really make sence of it.
Any way if i can help, in anway, plese do get in touch.
 Hope you are well

In a nutshell I am completely convinced after just two days of observing children, changing some aspects of our work and looking into your work that you have uncovered a truly colossal issue that our current educational system is simply reinforcing every single dayWe are very keen to take part in any work that would help - I am currently re-writing our school development plan in order to address the inner voice whatever happens, thank you for lighting a fire under us.
